History of the HTO
1962: Mr Tu Nhan Duc, the leader of "HẸ's group" raised a subscription among Chinese’s community in Saigon. Mr Du Nam Hi donated approximately 6000 square meters of land to build a hospital which was used as a place to serve poor people. It was named Sung Chinh.
1971: This one-hundred-bed hospital had been inaugurated. The Orthopedic Department had 30 beds at that time.
1978: Sung Chinh Hospital had been transferred into a public hospital, named TRAN HUNG DAO General hospital with 320 beds.
1985: BINH DAN Orthopedic Department has been merged with TRAN HUNG DAO General Hospital and changed its name into Orthopedic and Traumatic Centre
1996: Orthopedic and Traumatic Centre was the place to practice for doctors from Medical officer training and education Center, Medical University of Ho Chi Minh city.
2002: the 3998/QĐ - UB Decision of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City allowed Orthopedic and Traumatic Centre to change their name into Hospital of Traumatic and Orthopedic, which belonged to the Ministry of Health.
2002-now: HTO has 500 beds for inpatient and 1100 beds for outpatient

1960: Start Spinal surgery
1972: Applied AO Technique in Osteosynthesis
1973: Start total hip replacement surgical procedure
1979: manage patients with Continuous Pin-feed computer paper
1980: Data processing with computer’s help
1981: Print orthopedic documents
1985: Surgical departments (upper limb, lower limb, spine, pediatric, rehabilitation center) had been found and improved in numbers and qualities.
1987: approx. 40 doctors had come to different hospitals in France to learn
1989: found the Medical officer training and education Center in HCMC, created the orthopedic department of PHAM NGOC THACH medical university
Start working and learning with other occupy from France
1990: created Microsurgery Unit
1991: started Orthopedic overseas program with Texas university in San Antonio, North Carolina in Chicago, and still being continued
1992: computer-based monitoring at the pharmacy
Applied regional anesthetic techniques
1993: created Rheumatology department
Start Knee arthroscopy, create Orthopedic Ultrasound Unit
1994: created a wide clinic center with different rooms for different departments
Completely built up 10 Operating rooms and 2 PACU/Recovery rooms
Created pediatric orthopedic association and HCMC orthopedic association
Along with Medical officer training and education Center, created sport medicine Centre
1995: created Preoperative Care Department
Computer-based monitoring in administration works

1996: HTO had been awarded as a # 1 hospital and became an education center
1997: created microsurgery center, Orthopedic Pathology Department, Created Computing Unit
1998: cooperated with Rotary Club and ST Luke Hospital (AUS) for teaching and learning
activities in Hand surgery.

1985-2015: a huge amount of work has been completed. From the very first day with lack of human resource, tools and obsoleted technique, with only a few doctor from BINH DAN hospital, but with great love and passion for work and patient, WE had grown up and became a big hospital, with many rewards from the Vietnamese government.

Microsurgery replantation with hand/finger amputation injuries, brachial plexus palsy.
Shoulder, spine, knee arthroscopic surgeries
Hip/knee/shoulder joint replacement procedures
Preservative operation in bone cancer
Close-reduction and osteosynthesis with intraoperative C-arm Imaging
Become a place for teaching and learning orthopedic activities for students and post-gradated doctors.
Every year we have foreign students and other organizations from Japan, France, US to come to practice and transfer medical knowledge
Will apply arthroscopy for elbow, wrist, hip and ankle joints.
Over 18 years of establishment, the Department of Microsurgery has taken a new step in the development by applying microsurgical techniques in: Replantation of amputations, Toe to Thumb transplant surgery for hand reconstruction, Treatment of Peripheral nerve injuries, Brachial plexus damage, Free flaps, Pedical flaps, Muscle flaps, Bone flaps… in wounds with exposed hardware…
